Advanced Class Outline
The Advanced class started in October 2004, as a way of combining more hands-on instruction with opportunites to buy discounted tools. We've only done five or six of them, but the results are really gratifying. Poor people buying tools with the little money they have tells me that they are serious about taking care of their bikes. (D.P.)

Advanced class tools list
Advanced class in bicycle repair training, for discount tools
VBP presents an advanced class workshop, for discounted tools. Attend the full class, about 4-5 hours, bring bikes that need work, and receive up to 150,000 cedis worth of tools for half-price. Tools will be distributed at the end of class, in order of first come first served. So have an assistant write the name of each person as they arrive.
The class is only eligible to people who have attended a workshop or Earn-a-Bike, including local repairers. They don’t have to have bought a bike. Limit 25.

If you can get a chalkboard, that would be very nice.
Always have a bike to demonstrate with.
People are going to want to change the order of the discussion because of their particular problem. Make them wait. Don’t jump around from one subject to the other

Class outline
(you can change the order, but make sure you are done with one before going to the next.)

1. Review- Have everyone study the condition of their bike, and be prepared to report to the group. Don’t tell them right away how to check bearings, or the wheels. This will show how well they remember. But after asking a few people to report on their bike, you can give them all the review.

2. Chains. Review how important the chain is for transferring the power from your legs to the wheel.
Review cleaning,
discuss frozen links and how to find and fix them,
bent chain ring makes the chain fall off.
Worn out teeth makes the chain skip. Draw the new teeth next to worn teeth

3. Maintaining cables.
The problem with frayed ends.
Oiling, the end points where it goes inside the cable coat. Removing the cable

4. Brakes
Adjusting barrel screws, adjusting by loosening cable.
Centering brake pads (review)
Grinding down pads so they are flat and stop better

5. Selectors
Adjusting cables
Review limit screws.
Rear selector- Small selector wheels must be in straight line with freewheel. Use pliers to straighten.
Front selector- Selector cage must be straight with the chain and chain ring.
Discuss cross-chaining

6. Rebuilding bearings, with inspection, grease, lock ring.

7. Wheel straightening. Check spoke tension, use brake pads for guide, spot of oil on spoke nipple
